I live in Texas and I want to do freelance graphic design part-time. I still want to keep my full time job. Am I required to notify any agencies or register as a business to do this or can I just do it? Visit SBA.gov for information as far as tax goes. If you are making more than $600 a year then you need to start reporting it. IRS.gov will have lots of info on this one, but truly becoming a business will help you grow and earn more in the future. While there are a lot of people that go undetected from the IRS, there are huge consequences if you get caught. Also, becoming registered with the IRS will allow your business to grow and expand. It's well worth the time and effort. Visit SCORE.org before spending money on a lawyer. These guys are awesome and free. It's sponsored by the government to help people get their businesses growing. Visit the site and find your local chapter. My wife and I started a business last year. we used a lawyer. it cost $500 and there are some that will do it for less. The lawyer researched the name we wanted to make sure there was no one else that have the name and then registered it for us. Easy!! Get in touch with your lawyer or get a self-help legal software.
