What is one graphic design project that you did in school that you really liked?

This question is for graphic designers. I went to a small high school which didn't offer any computer-based art education such as graphic design. However, I did go on to art school, where I majored in marketing communications (a roundabout way to say advertising).

My favorite project was self-promotion. It was a semester-long project where each student had to (you guessed it) promote themselves by creating a business name and corporate ID package, design and copyright advertisements for your company, write press releases for your company and choose an appropriate distribution list, create a corporate charitable foundation or choose an existing charity your company would be devoted to...It was a full-on branding initiative, where the designer was responsible for every aspect of the project. It was an incredible challenge. I assume when you say "school" you mean highschool. My highschool had a very good Journalism Department.

Making a yearbook presents many graphic design challanges. My favorite project was cover design.

Making a cover for anything is a challange because it has to get people to open the cover, be entertaining, colorful, and intrigueing.

My sophomore year we used a holographic camera, photographed a statue of our school mascot in the school's foyer. The photo was taken from the entrance arcade of the school(a long arcade/museum). In the background was the double, grand staircases leading up three stories, between which could be seen the deep, collonaded arches leading into the auditorium. Much to see and trip on, with great perspective and depth.

We covered the entire cover of the book with this holographic image which moved you around the space as you moved the book. On top we embossed the years of the book and the school's name. It was intended to be psychedelic and highly drug influenced, as we were always wasted. We won 'best student-produced yearbook' at Nationals!!! I'm not saying get wasted and make a cover.

I'm just giving you an idea of what can be done. You may want to produce a magazine cover on your favorite subject, or a children's book cover.

Cover design forces you to be creative because it involves image selection, typography, image processing, color, and coming up with catchy words, etc...
