Graphic design is the process of communicating visually using text and/or images to present information, or promote a message.
I agree with the concise first answer here... and I have 30 years of experience doing graphic design...

Jeez, I've been doing it for years and to sum it up into one sentence would leave a lot out that's involved. I'll try anyways. Creating a visual layout or images for a practical purpose.
in few words i am teling u that creating a Logo, Designing an advertisment, Making an Ad, Having a wide mind, is all Graphic design
