Is graphic design and website design a good business to get into?

Is it a much needed service? I want to start my own business but want to know the longevity of that business.
Well, the internet is not going away, nor will advertising, so yeah, it's a long-term career and can be very lucrative. Animation and 3D graphics are also hot services in demand. If you go for web design, I highly recommend you learn some more advanced skills other than creating templates, such as javascript and Flash. It's also great to be familiar with PHP and ASP, but you can work with programmers to get that work accomplished if it's not your cup of tea.

I think you earn handsome amount, if you have business contacts. I also work as a freelancer but it is very difficult to get work.
The internet isn't going away. As long as you know what you're doing and someone wants a website... you'll always have a job. It can be pretty lucrative, but you'll have to hustle. It's one of those 'popular' jobs these days and everyone is doing it.

I have done web programming as an independent contractor off and on for several years now. I have also worked a job where my primary responsibility was web development. The field is a good one to get into but there are some nuances that will help you out.
For one, make the distinction between web programming and web design and graphic design. They are three distinct fields and require different skill sets. In my opinion graphic design is the hardest field to make money in... however once you establish yourself there is plenty of money to be made. I think this is due to the artistic nature of graphic design.
Web design is something that a lot of beginner programmers (I was one) get into to establish a foot-hold. You learn HTML and CSS to get layout stuff done but then you also start learning JavaScript and other scripting languages to make the web pages 'work'.
Web programming is more 'back end' development that goes on behind the scenes and is usually PHP, ASP.NET or Ruby oriented. There is more money to be made in programming than in design but design is a good way to get started if you want to be a programmer
